West Caldwell, the largest of The Caldwells trifecta, draws many young families with its relatively affordable prices for single-family houses. But in addition to value, this close-knit, family-oriented community of about 11,000 has an active recreation department, well-regarded public schools, several parks and tree-lined streets. With a long historical past dating back to the mid 1800's, West Caldwell has emerged as one of the most beautiful residential areas in Essex County. It was voted #74 in New Jersey Monthly's 2015 "Best Towns to Live."

The median house price in West Caldwell during 2015 was $481,500 (per Garden State MLS).

Bloomfield Avenue is located in the center of town, and is home to many of the locally owned stores, restaurants and boutiques of the town.

Residents place a large emphasis on recreation in West Caldwell. With Crane Park, Francisco Park and Grover Cleveland Park, there is boating, fishing, bird-watching, walking trails readily available. In addition, the West Caldwell Recreation Department (which also services Caldwell) is highly-recognized for its comprehensive programming for all ages.

The community also has two public pools, Cedar Street Pool and Westville Pool, with memberships available to residents of the township and some surrounding areas. The private Mountain Ridge Country Club is on Passaic Avenue.

Public Schools
Dating back to 1904, the towns of Caldwell and West Caldwell have shared a joint school district. Today the school system serves more than 2,300 students Grades Pre-K thru 12 across seven schools and is highly regarded for its modern facilities, technology and challenging curriculum.

Pre-School: Located in the Harrison School, the Pre-Kindergarten program is a tuition-based program open to children ages 4-5. Students do not need to be residents of Caldwell or West Caldwell to attend.

Harrison School: Pre-K and Pre-K for children with disabilities

Elementary School: All elementary school children Grades K-5 in the district are assigned to a primary school based on their residence location. Three of the four elementary schools -- excluding only Lincoln School -- are located in West Caldwell.

Middle School: The primary goal of Grover Cleveland Middle School is to help students achieve their physical, intellectual, social, and emotional potential. With more than 600 students, the middle school uses small group learning, a variety of special interest clubs and guidance services to help with creative expression. In addition, the three computer labs, two new science labs and completely renovated library serve as a learning hub for the students.

High School: Most recently ranked #52 public high school in the state by New Jersey Monthly, James Caldwell High School serves approximately 800 students. The curriculum is challenging, with16 AP classes and 6 Honors classes offered. Over 90 percent of graduating seniors go onto 2-year or 4-year colleges. In addition, the school has 26 varsity, 22 junior varsity and 6 freshman level athletic programs.

Essex County Vocational Technical School: Offers vocational programs to students from Essex County; one of the campuses is located in West Caldwell.



West Caldwell is situated about 20 miles from Manhattan, The township has no train station, but buses from the nearby Willowbrook Mall travel to Port Authority Bus Terminal in less than an hour. Commuters also can drive to the PATH station in Harrison, or take NJ Transit trains to Penn Station-Midtown from Little Falls or Montclair.
